Big Couloir (Big Sky, MT)
Big Sky doesn’t need to get creative in naming its runs. The terrain speaks for itself. Big Couloir, under the legendary Lone Peak Tram, is an absolute beauty. A true Rocky Mountain couloir, with sheer cliffs on both sides, it’s much steeper and tighter than the popular Liberty Bowl, and requires signing out at the patrol shack on top, along with carrying (and knowing how to use) avalanche gear like beacons, probes, and shovels. Don’t let the safety precautions discourage you. Due to the easy access (no hiking required) and inbounds avalanche control, Big Couloir is as approachable as couloirs get, and the open 50-degree slope below the choke is worth every jump turn you make to get there.
